What’s the Job?
The Learning Design Manager leads a team of Learning Designers to grow and thrive in creating technology-enabled learning solutions for clients. Under the leadership of the Lead Learning Designer and alongside other Learning Design Managers, they lead their team and contribute to establishing discipline practices, demonstrating expertise in either e-learning authoring and distribution technologies or curriculum design, ideally both. 

The Learning Design Manager is responsible for the professional development of a team of direct reports and acts as an advisor on project work to ensure they’re supported. They’re also responsible for departmental growth and success. They create a psychologically safe environment for their team by applying experience and aptitude for people management. 

Additionally, The Learning Design Manager is able to lead or advise on the learning design for a learning solutions project, overseeing the complete delivery and production of instructional materials for a project or product line.

Who are you?
You are an experienced Learning Design Manager with a proven track record of managing teams of Learning Designers and delivering high-quality instructional materials for projects or product lines, including distributed learning. You excel in leading teams, leveraging your expertise in multiple discipline specializations to guide their development.

You are a relationship-builder, fostering connections with both internal and external resources while cultivating a culture of best practices within the discipline. As a dedicated leader, you are passionate about developing learning design talent and aligning the team’s goals to department goals. Through sharing your expertise, you encourage your team to hone their existing skills and to learn new ones by encouraging creativity and innovation.

With a keen understanding of program outcomes, you confidently define the vision, technical specifications, and strategies for complex learning environments. Your ability to analyze client requirements and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams ensures the successful delivery of projects. 

What will you do?

Team Leadership

  • Manage a team of Learning Designers’ performance, career growth, and salary progression by understanding, applying, and holding your team accountable to RaceRocks policies, documentation, and approval processes.
  • Support the team’s growth by being involved in hiring, onboarding, and creating learning and development opportunities.
  • Maintain regular communication with team and individual members through weekly and biweekly 1:1 and team meetings.
  • Provide feedback including praise and constructive feedback that is timely, consistent, and aligned with how team members want to receive feedback.
  • Address conflict within your team and support your team in resolving it; escalate conflict when needed (e.g. if it involves team members that you do not manage).
  • Support your team in understanding and applying our People-First practices, balancing the needs of both the business and individuals.
  • Champion the identification, definition, and execution of evolving best practices within the discipline.

Project Work

  • Lead Learning Designers and oversee learning projects or product lines to execute the following activities:
    • Analyze client requirements and learner characteristics to provide recommendations.
    • Drive the creation of learning artifacts, including storyboards, e-learning modules, instructor-led training materials, job aids, and performance support tools.
    • Oversee the development of style guides and technical documentation to ensure products meet reporting and accessibility goals.
  • Conduct quality assurance reviews and provide feedback to ensure standards are consistently met.
  • Demonstrate and communicate expert knowledge of learning design and/or learning technologies to problem solve, inform best practices, and increase learning impact and efficiency.
  • Work cross-discipline to allocate resources to projects based on capacity and skill alignment.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers, developers, and artists to meet design requirements and establish cross-discipline strategy and practice.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with internal and external creative and development resources.

Qualifications / Skills:

  • 7+ years of experience in learning design or related role.
  • 3+ years in a leadership capacity.
  • Strong understanding of learning technologies or adult learning methodologies (both an asset). Exposure to and willingness to develop skills in both areas.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Proven track record of project and team leadership.
  • Ability to thrive in a remote, fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Continuous learner with a commitment to professional development.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., Education, Instructional Design, Distance Learning).

RaceRocks is a remote-first company with team members across Canada, with an office for optional use in Victoria, BC. Team members are required to be available for team building and collaboration during core operating hours of 9:00 am to 2:00 pm Pacific Time. Outside of core working hours, we offer flexibility to support work-life balance. Although our HQ is in Victoria, BC we are open to hiring candidates from nearly anywhere in Canada. At this time, we do not have the infrastructure to support hiring candidates from Quebec or to hire/support working internationally.
